When the overpowered try to explain to you their pains and injustices,
listen. Really listen. See us.
Don't rationalize.
The filter that you use to see the World, doesn't fit our brown faces. It doesn't fit our wheelchairs, our breasts, our hunger, our cardboard homes, our Qurans, our children's bullet wounds, our war-torn homes, our grief. The World is ugly, and nothing is rational. We've been overpowered long enough to learn that. We know what ugly looks like, and there is not much you can say to make the ugly rational.
We see you.
We see that you mean no harm when you're trying to convince us that the world can't be that ugly.
We see that, parting with your filter frightens you and is the cause of shattering anxiety.
Know that all we want is for you to see us. We need you to see us. We need you. We need your voice, because the truth is, our voices aren't loud enough.
When Planned Parenthoods are getting shot up, are voices aren't loud enough.
When no one is responsible for the death of a black 12-year old, are voices aren't loud enough.
When civilian families are dying because of someone else's war, and our leaders think the answer is more war, our voices aren't loud enough.
Believe our pain.
A collective sense of urgency is the beauty that will offset the ugly.
Hear us. See us.
