We hear it often, and not enough: all injustices are linked.
So yes, the dearth of color in Hollywood, is linked to the poisoned water of Flint,
it's linked to vandalized Mosques, graffitied and door handles wrapped with bacon,
it's linked to middle-of-the-night deportation raids, forcing women and children (the brown ones) back to the bloodthirsty violence of their countries.
People who commit crimes against humanity, have not met enough humans. It should be Hollywood's duty to introduce us people we have never met before. I can't name a single mainstream film that focuses on the drama of a Muslim in America. Or perhaps the Japanese internment camps from not that long ago. And that's not to say that every culture should be portrayed through their oppressions. But then again, where are the rom-coms starring a Muslim or an Asian?
It's not about recognition and statues.
It's hard to see when we're sitting in cushy red seats, with our salty popcorn and Gummi Bears,
but entertainment has a profound (and sometimes dangerous) effect on society. It is Hollywood's obligation work in the way of humanity.
Our generation and the ones before may be too hardened for true change.
But our children...
All shades of our children...
It's not too late to show them who they are, what they can do, and the kind of world they can live in.
